Troye Sivan’s New Album Is a Reminder That Confidence and Longing Can Coexist

Troye Sivan just dropped his fourth album, She’s the Best, and if the title alone doesn’t make you want to strut into your Monday like you own it, wait until you hear what’s actually underneath all that glam.

The album arrived on October 9, wrapped in cabaret shimmer and New York City nightlife energy — teasers of rockabilly hair, an overground subway platform on the cover, a title track featuring Charli XCX and, somehow, Nicole Kidman. On the surface, it’s pure confidence. It’s the kind of record that sounds like it already knows how good it looks.

But here’s the part that actually got me, past the vinyl variants and the fashion-editorial rollout: Sivan has said the record holds “really high highs” sitting right on top of “this deep sense of longing.” The brightest, most danceable moments on the album aren’t covering up the ache underneath. They’re built on it. He’s not choosing between glittering and aching. He’s doing both, sometimes in the same line.

You don’t have to pick a lane

We talk about confidence like it’s a finished state — like one day you arrive, and after that you just are confident, fully, all the time, no cracks showing. That’s not how it works for anyone, famous or not. The people who seem the most sure of themselves have usually just gotten better at holding both things at once, the high and the longing, instead of waiting for one to cancel out the other.

Sivan has talked about one of his favorite unreleased tracks being about “the attempts to mould and change myself to make myself more appealing.” That’s a specific, honest thing to admit on a record that’s supposed to be a victory lap. Most of us have done some version of that: softened an opinion, tweaked a personality trait, performed a version of ourselves we thought would be easier to love. The move isn’t pretending you never did it. It’s noticing it, naming it, and deciding what you actually want to keep.

Let the party and the ache share a room

There’s something freeing about an artist putting “She’s the Best” on the cover while the songs underneath are quietly about missing being loved a certain way. It gives the rest of us permission to stop editing our own contradictions down to something tidier. You can be genuinely proud of how far you’ve come this year and still wish certain people had stuck around. You can post the confident photo and still be figuring out who you are underneath it. Neither one cancels the other out. Neither one is the lie.

Sivan says his goal is “always to be super honest,” and honestly, that might be the whole trick. Not performing a certainty you don’t feel, and not performing sadness to seem deep, either. Just letting however you actually feel take up space, even when it’s two things at once that don’t seem to match.

So if today you’re somewhere between feeling like the best and feeling a little bit of that longing underneath, you’re not doing it wrong. You’re just being honest about having a full, complicated, interesting inner life. That’s not a contradiction to fix. It’s just what being a person, or writing a genuinely great pop album, actually sounds like.

Megan Moroney’s No. 1 Year Is Proof Good Things Really Do Take Time

Here's a little reminder the universe dropped this week, courtesy of a 28-year-old from Georgia with a guitar and a whole lot of patience: Megan Moroney just added six more shows to her sold-out Cloud 9 Tour, bringing the total to 49 dates, including second nights at arenas in Chicago, Atlanta, Boston, Los Angeles, and Nashville. That's not a tour. That's a victory lap.But here's the part that makes this more than just music news. Moroney's debut album, back in 2023, peaked at number 38 on the Billboard 200. Her second album climbed to number 9. And this year, her third album, fittingly titled Cloud 9, debuted at number one on the all-genre chart, pulling in the biggest opening week for a female country artist in nearly two years. She didn't skip a step. She climbed every single one of […]

What Today’s Massive Music Drop Can Teach Us About Starting Over

Fridays hit different when it's a new music Friday, and today is a big one. Pitbull just dropped PITCOIN, his first album in three years and 14th overall. Troye Sivan released She's The Best. Carly Rae Jepsen, Sheryl Crow, Greta Van Fleet, Pet Shop Boys, Royal Blood, and a dozen others all landed new music in the same 24 hours. It's a lot to scroll through. But underneath all that noise, there's a pretty simple reminder worth sitting with: it is never too late to come back, and it is never too small a thing to appreciate the people who show up for you. The comeback nobody asked for permission for Three years is a long gap in an industry built on constant output, and Pitbull could have let that silence turn into an ending. Instead, he came back with […]

What Spider-Man’s Brand New Day Gets Right About Starting Over

If your feed looks anything like ours this week, it's full of one thing: Spider-Man: Brand New Day just swung into theaters, and the first reactions are glowing. Critics are calling it the most grounded, most mature entry in Tom Holland's run yet, with more than one review saying he's never been better in the role. The word going around most often isn't "epic" or "massive" — it's grounded. After a few years of multiverse chaos, cameos stacked on cameos, and timelines that needed a diagram to follow, this one apparently does something almost radical: it slows down and tells one honest story well. That's worth sitting with for a second, because the title is doing more work than a marketing team probably intended. A brand new day isn't a clean slate Here's what's easy to forget about Peter Parker's […]

Taylor Swift’s Encore at No. 1 Is a Lesson in Starting Over

Taylor Swift's "The Life of a Showgirl" just logged its 13th week at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. That alone would be a notable run. But here's the part that actually stopped us mid-scroll: the album had started to slip, the way every album eventually does, until a deluxe "Encore" edition with four new songs landed and pushed it right back to the top spot, past the week's freshest competition. Months after the original release, in a music cycle that usually moves on in days, she didn't let the story end on a dip. She added a verse. It's easy to watch that from the outside and file it under "famous person does famous person things." But strip away the arena tours and the record labels for a second, and what's left is a pretty relatable shape: something you […]

Victoria Monét’s New Album Is a Beautiful Reminder to Tune Into Love’s Frequency

If you haven't heard yet, Victoria Monét just gave the world a 22-track gift called Frequency of Love, and honestly, the timing feels like more than coincidence. The three-time GRAMMY winner dropped the album this week through Lovett Music/RCA, stacked with features from SZA, Bruno Mars, Leon Thomas, Bryson Tiller, Lucky Daye, Chlöe, and even her own daughter, Hazel Monét. It's the kind of release that reminds you why music still matters: it's not just something you stream in the background, it's something that can shift the way you walk through your day. There's something to that title that's worth sitting with for a second. Frequency of Love. Not "the idea of love" or "a love song" — a frequency. Something you tune into, on purpose, like turning a dial until the static clears and the signal comes through. That's […]

Why October Feels Like a Second New Year (And How to Actually Use It)

Have you noticed everyone suddenly talking about fresh starts again — in October? If your feed has been full of people making new goal lists, cleaning out their closets, and swearing off their summer bad habits this week, you've met the "October theory," and it's having a real moment on TikTok right now. Here's the idea in a nutshell: October 1st works like a second New Year's Day. We spend January 1st loaded down with resolutions, most of which quietly dissolve by February. But October hits differently. The air changes, the light gets softer, and something in us just wants to shed what isn't working — like the trees do. Psychotherapist Brianna Paruolo, who's been quoted on the trend, put it beautifully: autumn "often sparks a natural inclination for transformation," the same way trees let go of their leaves without […]
