NEW DELHI: As Narendra Modi-government completed 11 years later at the Centre, leader of opposition in Rajya Sabha Mallikarjun Kharge offered a critical assessment of how the central government has fared in fulfilling its promise of “achhe din”.Taking to X, Kharge highlighted several concerns about the current regime, including rising unemployment, unfulfilled job and income promises, challenges faced by marginalized communities, increasing inflation and inequality, setbacks in initiatives like Make in India, strained foreign relations, and perceived weakening of democratic institutions.Every section of society, he said, has been adversely affected, turning the promise of “achhe din” (good days) into a “dreadful dream.” “Every section of the 140 crore population is troubled, This is how the Lotus symbol has been in 11 years!!” he said.“26 May 2014: In 11 years, by turning tall “promises” into hollow “claims”, the Modi Government has ruined the country in such a way that the talk of “good days” has now turned out to be a “dreadful dream,” he said as he went on to list those claims:
- Youth – Promise of two crore jobs per year, in reality crores are missing
- Farmers – Income did not double, on top of that they had to eat rubber bullets
- Women – conditions apply to reservation, security in tatters
- Weaker sections – SC/ST/OBC/Minorities are facing terrible atrocities, their participation is lost
- Economy – inflation at its peak, unemployment on the rise, consumption at a standstill,
- Make in India flopping and inequality at its peak
- Foreign Policy – Promised to become “Vishwaguru” but spoiled relations with every country
Democracy – RSS attacks every pillar, misuse of ED/CBI, autonomy of institutions destroyed
The BJP’s uninterrupted run at the Centre began in 2014, when the saffron party secured a clear majority. It went on to retain power in both the 2019 and 2024 general elections, marking three consecutive terms in office.Additionally, Congress leader Jairam Ramesh called the day an “undeclared emergency”.“India has won! India is victorious. Good days are coming,” PM Modi had said after his party secured victory in 2014.Modi was sworn in as 14th prime minister on May 26, 2014, after a decisive victory in the general elections. Since then, he has remained in power for 11 consecutive years, securing a third straight mandate in the 2024 general elections — a first for any Indian prime minister.
