More than 250 people have been killed in Israeli strikes on Gaza since Thursday morning, according to local health officials. At the same time, US President Donald Trump has voiced support for providing aid to Palestinians, saying that people in Gaza are starving. When asked about Israeli plans to expand military operations in Gaza, Trump told reporters, “I think a lot of good things are going to happen over the next month, and we’re going to see. We have to help, also, out the Palestinians. You know, a lot of people are starving in Gaza, so we have to look at both sides.”The strikes over the last 24 hours have marked one of the deadliest phases of bombardment since a truce collapsed in March, news agency Reuters reported, with Israeli military saying Saturday it had launched “extensive strikes” as part of a fresh offensive in Gazaa, a new ground offensive is also expected soon. Friday’s strikes were mainly focused on the northern part of Gaza, where dozens were reported dead overnight, said Gaza health ministry spokesperson Khalil al-Deqran. Since the collapse of a truce in March, this has been one of the most deadly periods of violence in the region. Israel has continued its military buildup along the Gaza border and intensified bombardment, despite international appeals for a ceasefire and an end to the blockade. The humanitarian situation in Gaza has worsened. For over two months, Israel has blocked the entry of food, fuel, and medical supplies into the region — the longest closure Gaza has faced. Aid groups, including the Red Cross, have warned that the humanitarian system in Gaza is close to breaking down. Gaza’s health ministry reports that around 60,000 children are currently suffering from signs of malnutrition. The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has also issued a warning about worsening malnutrition among children in the area. Doctors on the ground say they have run out of basic medicine needed to treat common illnesses, while humanitarian officials warn that famine is a growing threat in the besieged territory.Israel has said that its goal in Gaza is to eliminate Hamas, the militant group that carried out an attack on Israeli communities on October 7, 2023. That attack resulted in the deaths of about 1,200 people and the taking of roughly 250 hostages. Since then, Israel’s military campaign has caused large-scale damage in Gaza. According to health officials in the territory, more than 53,000 people have been killed. The offensive has also displaced almost the entire population of Gaza. Aid organizations report that the blockade has led to a serious humanitarian crisis. In Beit Lahiya, Israel dropped leaflets telling residents to evacuate, regardless of whether they were staying in tents, buildings, or shelters. The message on the leaflets said: “Leave southwards immediately.”
