NASHIK: Knives, knuckledusters, tobacco packets, empty condom packets and boxes and jewellery items (made of steel or aluminum) were found in the bags of students during random checks at a private school in the Ghoti village of Nashik’s Igatpuri taluka.
The items were seized by the school authorities in drives conducted over the past seven years. The students’ parents were informed and the children were also counselled from time to time.
“We conduct the checks to keep an eye on what the students do, and alert parents in case the students are found with items they are not supposed to have. This is to ensure the students refrain from misbehaving in school. That is why we seized the articles,” said Manoj Jadhav, who heads the village school committee, comprising several villagers and school officials.
The committee regularly inspects bags of students of Classes VIII to X and keeps the parents informed, Jadhav said. The committee also provides school books, uniforms and other things to students with the help of donors.
Knuckledusters, knives in school students’ bags
A parent, Shankar Gavit, said, “In 2022, my neighbour’s child was found carrying Rs 300 in his bag. After the school committee found the money, they called up the child’s father. The father had an open dialogue with the child and sorted out the matter. Since then, I also started a surprise check of the bags of my children.”
The initiative aims to guide children who might be influenced by their surroundings, helping them avoid harmful habits through school and parental intervention. Jadhav acknowledged that some students continue mischievous behaviour without getting caught.
“Only recently, we carried out a drive in which the students with fancy haircuts were picked up. A barber was called to the school, and all selected students were given neat haircuts. This was again done with the knowledge of the parents,” Jadhav said.
Ghoti inspector Vinod Patil, who visited the school after there were reports of drugs being found with students, said, “That’s not the case. Some students had tobacco pouches. The children might have got them from any place. In all, two knuckledusters, two small knives and several bracelets besides other things were seized by the school. We also held a dialogue with the students urging them to stay away from vices.”
