NEW DELHI: Federal Bureau of Investigation chief Kash Patel on Monday hailed the arrest of terrorist Harpreet Singh in the United States and assured that the accused, wanted in India for multiple terror attacks in Punjab, will be brought to justice.
Patel stated that the FBI’s Sacramento division coordinated the investigation with Indian authorities.
“CAPTURED: HARPREET SINGH, part of an alleged foreign terrorist gang, here illegally in the United States, who we believe was involved in planning multiple attacks on police stations both in India and the United States,” Patel said.
“FBI Sacramento conducted the investigation in coordination with our local partners as well as Indian counterparts. Excellent work from all involved — justice will be served. The FBI will continue to pursue those who perpetrate violence, no matter where they are,” he added.
Harpreet Singh was arrested on Thursday in Sacramento, California, by the FBI and US immigration officials.
Singh, also known as Happy Passia and Jora, hails from Passia village in Punjab’s Amritsar district. He had lived in the United Kingdom briefly before crossing into the United States illegally from Mexico in 2021.
According to Punjab Police, Singh is wanted in 17 criminal cases, including charges under India’s anti-terror and drug laws. Twelve of these cases were registered between November 2022 and April 2024.
On March 23, the National Investigation Agency filed a chargesheet against four operatives of the banned terrorist organization Babbar Khalsa International in connection with the 2024 Chandigarh grenade attack. Among those named were Harwinder Singh Sandhu, also known as Rinda, a Pakistan-based terrorist, and Harpreet Singh, alias Happy Passia, who was based in the United States at the time.
According to the NIA, Rinda and Passia were the key conspirators and handlers behind the attack. They allegedly provided logistical support, terror funding, weapons, and ammunition to operatives in India to execute the strike.
The grenade attack, which occurred in September 2024, targeted a house believed to be occupied by a retired Punjab Police officer. The incident is considered part of a larger transnational conspiracy by BKI to reignite terrorist activity in India.
