NEW DELHI: The Election Commission of India on Sunday announced that byelections to five Assembly seats in Gujarat, Kerala, Punjab, and West Bengal will be held on June 19. Counting of votes is scheduled for June 23. In Gujarat, bypolls will be held in Kadi following the death of BJP MLA Karsanbhai Punjabhai Solanki, and in Visavadar, vacated after Bhayani Bhupendrabhai Gandubhai resigned. Nilambur in Kerala goes to bypoll after LDF-backed MLA PV Anvar resigned to join Trinamool Congress as its Kerala convenor. In Punjab, Ludhiana West fell vacant after the death of Congress MLA Gurpreet Bassi Gogi in January. Kaliganj in West Bengal will see a bypoll following the demise of TMC MLA Nasiruddin Ahamed due to cardiac arrest in February.
EC issues fresh poll day instructions
Alongside the poll announcement, the EC issued fresh guidelines aimed at improving voter convenience and poll management. Voters will now be able to deposit mobile phones outside polling stations in designated pigeonhole boxes or jute bags. Phones will not be allowed inside the stations and must be switched off within 100 metres of the premises. Exceptions can be made in special circumstances by the Returning Officer. To ensure compliance with Rule 49M of the Conduct of Elections Rules, 1961—meant to protect voting secrecy—the EC has also rationalised canvassing norms. Booths set up by candidates to issue unofficial voter slips must now be placed beyond 100 metres of any polling station. The guidelines were issued under the supervision of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar and Election Commissioners Sukhbir Singh Sandhu and Vivek Joshi.
