PATNA: Empty chairs welcomed Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Sunday when he reached Buxar district to address the ‘Jai Bapu-Jai Bhim-Jai Samvidhan‘ rally.
“Only a few hundred people were present at the rally venue—Dalsagar Football Ground, about 10 km west from Buxar town—when Kharge reached there. More than 90% of the chairs arranged for the public were seen unoccupied when Kharge was sitting at the dais,” some press photographers, who had gone to cover the rally, told TOI on Sunday.
Congress Buxar MLA, Sanjay Kumar Tiwari alias Munna Tiwari, was heard requesting people to reach the venue and sit on the chairs. But, most of the chairs remained empty till the end of the rally, the photographers said.
While addressing the rally, Kharge said there will be a single engine govt of INDI Alliance in Bihar.
Taking a jibe at the ‘double engine’ NDA govt led by CM Nitish Kumar, Kharge said Bihar is at the 36th place on the human development index in the country. “This is the development model of the Nitish Kumar govt in Bihar,” he said.
“PM Modi and CM Nitish are only for chair while Congress works for the poor,” he said.
He said Nitish joined hands with the BJP-RSS who believed in (Nathuram) Godse and killed Mahatma Gandhi. Kharge questioned the political principles of Nitish and appealed to people to elect the Congress and a Grand Alliance govt in Bihar.
He said Congress is not greedy for power and accused PM Modi of lying to the people of the country. He said Modi could not fulfil his promise of 2 crore jobs, bringing back black money and cleaning of the Ganga water and accused him and Nitish of coming together for political power and having no real commitment to the development of the state.
On the ongoing debate on the constitutional validity of the Waqf Amendment Act, he said, “By bringing the Waqf bill in Parliament, PM created a dispute where it was not. BJP can never be a friend of farmers, or women or the poor and they are hell bent on ruining the country and its poor people by creating a divide.”
Kharge came down heavily on the central investigation agencies and “politically motivated” action against Congress netas— Sonia and Rahul Gandhi—in the National Herald case. He said the central govt was deliberately taking action against the Congress netas to harass them. “The family of former PMs Indira Gandhi and Rajiv Gandhi, who sacrificed their lives for the unity of the country, will not get scared by a chargesheet in the National Herald case,” Kharge said.
Interestingly, the audience were ignorant when Kharge asked them whether they had heard of National Herald newspaper, founded by Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru in 1937.
