NEW DELHI: Madhya Pradesh chief minister Mohan Yadav on Tuesday criticised Congress leader Rahul Gandhi for not removing his shoes while paying tribute at the statue of former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, saying it was against Indian culture. Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, arrived in Bhopal on a one-day visit to attend multiple meetings and launch the Congress’s ‘Sangathan Srijan Abhiyan’, aimed at strengthening the party at the grassroots level ahead of the 2028 state assembly elections. Shortly after his arrival, Gandhi paid floral tribute at a life-size statue of his grandmother Indira Gandhi, located outside the state Congress headquarters. A video of the moment went viral on social media, showing him offering flowers while still wearing shoes. Reacting to the video, CM Mohan Yadav, after attending a BJP meeting, said, “The Leader of Opposition has come to our state. He should come. It is a democracy. Everyone has the right to come. He offered floral tribute to his Dadi ji (grandmother) and did not remove his shoes. This did not suit me. This is against our sanskar (culture). He should take care of this.” Gandhi is also scheduled to hold meetings with party MPs, MLAs, and observers as part of the campaign to revive the Congress organisation in the state.
