NEW DELHI: AIADMK on Sunday cast doubts over the facts and figures of the welfare schemes listed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Tamil Nadu and dubbed them as “tall claims” amid the ongoing speculations of a possible alliance with BJP in the state.
AIADMK national spokesperson Kovai Sathyan claimed that the beneficiaries of the Centre’s schemes have been fake since the DMK came to power in Tamil Nadu.
“We welcome anyone who brings in welfare measures and benefits for the state as well as for the people, but what is surprising is the tall claims made by Prime Minister on the concrete houses and the piped water connections,” Sathyan said.
“Since DMK came to power, all the beneficiaries have been fake. All the central government-sponsored schemes; beneficiaries are not the real ones. Money worth crores and crores have been swindled… I’m not sure why the BJP is turning a blind eye towards it,” he added.
This comes amid speculation over revival of the BJP-AIADMK alliance came after AIADMK general secretary and former Tamil Nadu chief minister Edappadi K Palaniswami met Union home minister Amit Shah.
On March 28, Annamalai described the 2026 elections as an opportunity to dethrone the DMK, citing corruption allegations and a “deteriorating law and order situation” in the state. “The DMK should be brought down from power and no vote should get wasted by the votes getting shifted between different parties. Tamil Nadu, as of now, has a five-cornered contest. Nowhere else in the Indian politics you see a five-cornered contest,” he said.
He reiterated that alliance decisions rest with BJP’s national leadership. “With respect to the alliance, you have to understand that for a national party like the BJP, a disciplined party, it is our national leadership that will decide. So, we have committees, we have parliamentary boards which look into a lot of angles before they make the decision.
Earlier in the day, Listing development milestones, PM Modi said the Chennai Metro, 77 modernised railway stations, and 4,000 km of newly built roads under the Pradhan Mantri Gram Sadak Yojana had transformed connectivity in Tamil Nadu.
Under PM Awas Yojana, over 12 lakh pucca houses had been built in the state, he added. He said small farmers in Tamil Nadu had received Rs 12,000 crore under the PM-Kisan scheme, and crop insurance claims of Rs 14,800 crore had been disbursed through the PM Fasal Bima Yojana.
On the fisheries sector, the Prime Minister said Tamil Nadu had received significant investment through the PM Matsya Sampada Scheme. “The fishing community of Tamil Nadu is extremely hardworking… and the world can clearly see the strength of the state in the Blue Economy,” he said.
