Although schools remain open as of now, widespread calls for work-from-home and remote learning have surfaced due to unsafe travel conditions.Kerala: Orange alert in Thiruvananthapuram and neighbouring districtsAs per PTI, the IMD issued an orange alert for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Pathanamthitta, warning of very heavy rainfall between 11 cm and 20 cm. Yellow alerts were sounded in Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Kannur, and Kasaragod.Thunderstorms with gusty winds at 40 km/h are forecast at isolated locations. So far, there has been no declaration of school holidays, but local authorities continue to monitor the evolving weather conditions closely.Tamil Nadu and Mumbai: Pre-monsoon showers and safety advisoriesIn Mumbai and neighbouring areas like Palghar, Thane, and Raigad, the IMD (via ANI, May 19) forecast light to moderate rainfall with thundershowers and gusty winds reaching 50–60 km/h. Mumbai has been experiencing relief from humid weather, but the alert remains in place until May 22.In Tamil Nadu, rainfall accompanied by thunderstorms is expected to continue for the next few days. No school closures have been reported yet in either state.Pune and Maharashtra districts under weather watchIn Pune, the IMD expects moderate rain and thunderstorms, as reported by ANI. Districts like Kolhapur, Satara, Nasik, and Ahilyanagar have been warned of gusty winds and lightning on May 19. The Regional Meteorological Centre has issued alerts for parts of South Konkan-Goa and Marathwada. Schools remain operational as of now but are advised to remain cautious.Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand: Orange alerts for hilly terrainAs per ANI reports from May 19, the IMD has issued orange alerts for seven districts in Himachal Pradesh, including Mandi, Kullu, Shimla, Solan, and Sirmaur, forecasting hailstorms, thunderstorms, and gusty winds. The region has already experienced power outages and roadblocks due to the heavy rain.Similarly, Uttarakhand has received an orange warning for May 19 and 20. The Uttarakhand Police, through a public advisory, urged Chardham Yatra pilgrims to travel with caution and contact emergency services (112) if required. No school closures have been confirmed, but travel disruptions in hilly districts could affect attendance.
