In the small town of Kentville, Nova Scotia, on May 20, 1967, a future leader was born to immigrant parents who would shape her life in ways that echoed the values of resilience, education, and a deep commitment to service.Her name was Anita Indira Anand, and though she might not have known it at the time, she was destined to break barriers, not just in Canada, but globally. It starts with her family — a family steeped in both the medical profession and the traditions of service. Her parents, SV Anand and Saroj Anand, both doctors from India, moved to Canada in the early 1960s when the South Asian community in Nova Scotia was small but growing. SV Anand, a general surgeon from Tamil Nadu, and Saroj Anand, an anesthesiologist from Punjab, laid the foundation for a family that would always value education and public service. But perhaps it was Anita’s grandfather, VA Sundaram, who had the most profound impact on her worldview. Sundaram was a freedom fighter in India’s independence movement, a legacy of activism and resistance that Anita carried with her into her own career.

Academic Excellence Across Continents

Growing up with two sisters, Gita and Sonia, both highly accomplished in their own fields, Anita learned early on that education was not just a privilege but a responsibility. But while her family set high expectations, it was Anita’s own passion for learning that would set her on a unique path. She excelled in her studies and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) in political studies from Queen’s University in 1989.Yet, for Anand, this was just the beginning.Her thirst for knowledge led her across the globe to Wadham College, Oxford University, where she pursued a Bachelor of Arts in Jurisprudence, one of the most prestigious programs in the world. As she immersed herself in the study of law and politics, Anita developed a reputation for her rigorous intellect and analytical skills. The journey didn’t stop there. Determined to deepen her legal expertise, she went on to complete a Bachelor of Laws (LLB) from Dalhousie University, followed by a Master of Laws (LLM) from the University of Toronto, an institution renowned for its legal programs.

Political Contribution

Anita entered politics at a time when Canada was facing both domestic and international challenges. Her career trajectory was rapid, and it wasn’t long before she was appointed as Canada’s Minister of Public Services and Procurement in November 2019. During this critical period, as the world grappled with the COVID-19 pandemic, she led efforts to secure personal protective equipment and other essential supplies for Canadians, demonstrating a sharp focus on public health and national security.Her leadership skills soon caught the attention of Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and in a pivotal moment in December 2024, she was appointed as Canada’s Minister of Transport. There, she focused on modernizing Canada’s transportation infrastructure and addressing issues such as urban congestion and climate change.
