NEW DELHI: Over the past 36 hours, India and Pakistan have engaged in their most intense military confrontation since 2019, marking a significant escalation in tensions between the nuclear-armed neighbors.India launched “Operation Sindoor,” a precision strike targeting terrorist camps in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK), eliminating over 100 terrorists.This operation came as a response to the recent Pahalgam terror attack.The situation escalated sharply when Pakistan launched drone attacks and missile strikes on Indian military installations on the nights of May 7 and May 8, targeting multiple locations across Northern and Western India. In response, India executed a precise counteroffensive, striking key Pakistani military bases and air defense systems, including sites in Lahore and Multan.Multiple cities reported blackouts, while air raid sirens echoed through various regions, creating an atmosphere of tension.Here are 10 things that happened in the last 36 hours.

‘Over 100 Terrorists neutralised’

While chairing an all-party meet, defence minister Rajnath Singh said that the armed forces killed over 100 terrorists in the precision strikes it carried under ‘Operation Sindoor’.He also said that the operation is still ongoing and India will hit back if Pakistan attacks in the wake of India’s targeted strike.Cross-Border Strikes IntensifyIndia targeted multiple air defence systems and other strategic locations in Pakistan after intercepting missiles and drones launched across the border. Pakistan’s military responded with a salvo of missiles and suicide drones aimed at 15 Indian military targets. The Indian Army effectively repelled these attacks and delivered a befitting reply to the ceasefire violations.

‘Pahalgam was the original escalation point of the recent tension’

Ministry of external affairs, in a special joint briefing, reiterated that the Pahalgam terror attack was the original escalation point of the recent tension between India and Pakistan.Foreign secretary Viram Misri said, “Pakistan’s reputation as the epicentre of global terrorism is rooted in a number of instances. I don’t need to remind where Osama Bin Laden was found and who called him a martyr. Pakistan is also home to a large number of UN proscribed terrorists and also to terrorists proscribed by many countries. You must have seen in the last few days, their defence minister and former foreign minister accepted their country’s involvement with such terror groups.”

India hit several air defence systems and other targets in Pakistan after intercepting missiles and drones launched from across the border against Indian military bases and civilian areas later at night.Pakistan launched a salvo of missiles and suicide drones at 15 Indian military targets in northern and western India around 1 am.“Drone attacks effectively repulsed and befitting reply was given to the ceasefire violations,” Army said.“India remains committed to safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the nation. All nefarious designs will be responded with force,” it added.

Leaves cancelled, nightly blackouts and curfews imposed

Nightly blackouts, curfews, and mass leave cancellations for medical and security personnel were imposed Thursday as Punjab, Rajasthan, and Gujarat fortified their Pakistan frontier.Rajasthan imposed power blackouts for the second consecutive night in Barmer, Jaisalmer, Bikaner, Sriganganagar, and Jodhpur, adjusting the timing from the previous midnight to 4 am schedule to a new window of 9 pm to 4 am Residents have been ordered indoors, instructed to shut off lights, and warned against outdoor movement. Sirens will signal blackout start and end.Violations could lead to legal action, officials said. All schools, coaching centres, madrassas, and anganwadi centres in affected districts, including Jodhpur, are closed. Exams in Jai Narayan Vyas University have been postponed indefinitely.

Omar Abdullah heads to Jammu after failed Pakistani drone attack

Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Omar Abdullah is heading to Jammu on Friday to assess the situation following a failed Pakistani drone attack that targeted Jammu city and adjoining areas.Residents reported a night of blackout and gunfire, while the Army successfully neutralised all incoming drones.In a post on X, Abdullah said, “Driving to Jammu now to take stock of the situation after last night’s failed Pakistani drone attack directed at Jammu city & other parts of the division.”

Air raid warning in Ambala and Chandigarh

An air raid warning was issued by the Air Force Station in Ambala, indicating a possible attack from Pakistan. Sirens were sounded across the city at 10:22 am, and residents were urged to remain indoors and avoid balconies or open areas.“An air warning has been received from Air Force Station of possible attack. Sirens are being sounded. All are advised to remain indoors and away from balconies,” a directive issued by the Divisional Commissioner read. The warning comes amid escalating tensions between India and Pakistan following Operation Sindoor, which has led to increased vigilance across several northern states.Earlier, air raid sirens were sounded in Chandigarh on Friday morning by the Air Force Station, warning of a possible aerial attack.

BSF foils major infiltration bid in J&K’s Samba, at least 7 terrorists killed

Border Security Force (BSF) thwarted a significant infiltration attempt in the Samba Sector of the Jammu Frontier early Friday and neutralised seven terrorists.The BSF confirmed the input through a statement pointing out that the infiltration bid was noticed during the intervening night of May 8 and 9.According to BSF, a large group of terrorists attempted to cross into Indian territory under the cover of fire provided by Pakistan Rangers from the Dhandhar post.However, the force said, the attempt was promptly detected by the BSF’s advanced surveillance grid.“Acting swiftly, alert BSF troops engaged the infiltrators in a fierce exchange of fire. In the ensuing gunfight, at least seven terrorists were neutralised,” said the BSF.Additionally, retaliatory action by BSF caused extensive damage to the Dhandhar post.

A bomb-like object was found in Rajasthan

A bomb-like object was found in the Kishanghat area of Rajasthan’s Jaisalmer district, prompting swift action by the local police and Air Force. According to the police, the object was found near a nursery in the colony of the Jogis, located in front of Kishanghat under Kotwali police station area.Kotwali SHO Prem Daan said it seems to be a bomb-like object. Experts from the Army are on their way to Kishanghat to defuse it.“It is currently not known if it is live or destroyed,” he said.Arjun Nath, a local, spotted the object and immediately informed Kishanghat Sarpanch representative Kalyan Ram, who then alerted authorities. Following this, teams from the local police and the Indian Air Force arrived at the scene, they said.The area has been cordoned off as a precautionary measure and further investigation is underway.The object resembled parts of a drone that was launched by Pakistan on Jaisalmer on Thursday night around 10:30 pm However, official confirmation is awaited.

IPL cancelled

The Indian Premier League (IPL) has been suspended indefinitely due to the ongoing conflict.The decision follows the cancellation of a match between Punjab Kings and Delhi Capitals in Dharamsala, prompted by air raid alerts in neighboring cities.

Army releases video

The Army on Friday released dramatic footage showcasing its “befitting reply” to the multiple ceasefire violations by Pakistan on the night of May 8–9. The release followed a series of overnight attacks by Pakistani Armed Forces, which included the use of drones and other munitions across the western border and along the Line of Control (LoC) in Jammu and Kashmir.In a post on X, the Indian Army said, “OPERATION SINDOOR: Pakistan Armed Forces launched multiple attacks using drones and other munitions along the entire Western Border on the intervening night of 08 and 09 May 2025. Pak troops also resorted to numerous ceasefire violations (CFVs) along the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir. The drone attacks were effectively repulsed and a befitting reply was given to the CFVs. The Indian Army remains committed to safeguarding the sovereignty and territorial integrity of the Nation. All nefarious designs will be responded with force.”The video released by the Army underscores the scale of India’s counteroffensive and reaffirms its resolve to retaliate firmly against cross-border aggression.
